Más de 100 defensores de derechos humanos pertenecientes a organizaciones miembro de la Red Euro-Mediterránea de Derechos Humanos -REMDH- se reúnen en Madrid del viernes 12 al domingo 14 de mayo para analizar temas como las relaciones entre la Unión Europea y los países árabes, los procesos de democratización, la seguridad humana y el cumplimiento de los derechos humanos en la región. El encuentro se celebra en el Hotel Meliá Avenida América (C/ Juan Ignacio Luca de Tena, 36).

La ONG ACSUR-Las Segovias es la encargada de organizar esta VII Asamblea General de la Red Euro-Mediterránea de Derechos Humanos (REDMDH), ya que es la organización que representa a esta red en España. Para la REMDH "es una ocasión de encontrar actores clave en la defensa de los derechos humanos en la Región y de debatir sobre cuestiones como la libertad de asociación, la justicia, los derechos de las mujeres, la educación en derechos humanos y juventud, el conflicto de Medio Oriente, los derechos de los inmigrantes y refugiados, los derechos económicos y sociales...".

Algunas de las organizaciones que participan son la Asociación Árabe de Derechos Humanos, el Consejo Nacional por la Libertad de Túnez. La Organización de Periodistas Iraquíes por la Defensa de los Derechos, la Red de Derechos Humanos de los Balcanes, la Federación Internacional Helsinki de Derechos Humanos y la Plataforma de ONG Euromediterránea.

La sesión de apertura es el viernes 12 de mayo a las 9 horas y estará a cargo del presidente de la REMDH, Kamel Jendoubi, el Embajador del Proceso de Barcelona, Juan Prat y el Vicepresidente de ACSUR, Jordi Pedret. Durante la jornada se presentarán las líneas de estratégicas de trabajo e informes económicos, políticos y financieros de la REMDH. El sábado se celebran los debates y talleres sobre los principales temas de trabajo de la REMDH. (Se adjunta programa completo)

La Red Euro-Mediterránea de Derechos Humanos (REDMDH) es una red independiente de organizaciones e instituciones de derechos humanos que trabajan para promover y proteger los Derechos Humanos en la Región del Mediterráneo y que están comprometidos en la promoción del entendimiento intercultural. La REMDH está formada por miembros de 30 países .

La Asociación para la Cooperación con el Sur (ACSUR)-Las Segovias, que cumple 20 años, es una organización ciudadana, pluralista y laica, comprometida con una acción de transformación social para construir un modelo de desarrollo equitativo, sostenible y democrático a escala global entre hombres y mujeres. ACSUR-Las Segovias fue elegida en 2004 por las ONG españolas para representarlas en el Consejo de Cooperación y por las ONG europeas para presidir la Plataforma No Gubernamental Euromed. En el 2005 ganó el Premio ACPE 2005 al "Impacto Social" y acaba de recibir el Premio Pere Casaldáliga a la Solidaridad.
